DISPLACEMENT/ INVERSION

Displacement/Inversion was installed in Garrison Place in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh.  The project was part of the Three Rivers Festival which is an annual festival of the arts.  My project envisioned bringing a suspended upside-down forest to the alleyway as a response to the threatened urban green spaces such as Hays Woods in Pittsburgh.  The unexpected encounter with upside-down trees in a concrete canyon of downtown subtly points to the city dwellers' complicity in the eradication of green space that used to cover the downtown core.  The trees were in trouble and almost dead when I found them in the Eisler Landscaping nursery north of Pittsburgh and were donated to the project by the firm.
